CONTACT GOVERNOR SANFORD
Please write a brief and courteous letter to South Carolina Governor
Mark
Sanford. It is best if you send it in the regular mail, and at this
point
there is still time - if you act right now. The address is below.
Please
make the following points in your letter:
- Please commute the sentence of Shawn Paul Humphries.
- This case should never have been considered for the death penalty.
It was
an attempted armed robbery where the victim reached for a gun and the
defendant fired one time and ran. Of the hundreds of tragic murders
that
take place every year in South Carolina this was clearly not the
worst of
the worst.
- Mr. Humphries received a death sentence in large part because the
prosecutor compared his life with his victim's life in closing
arguments in
sentencing, which a panel of the Circuit Court of Appeals concluded
was
improper.
- Governor, you have a legal and moral obligation to make sure our
death
penalty system is fair to all. You also have an obligation to instill
mercy
into the system.
- As a South Carolina citizen, I ask you not to allow Mr. Humphries
to be
killed.
