COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Shawn Humphries is executed by lethal injection for the 1994 New Year's Day murder of a convenience store clerk.

He's the 1,001st person to die since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.

Humphrie killed Mendal Alton Smith in Greenville County 11 years ago.

Humphries is the third person executed in South Carolina this year. He is the 35th inmate put to death in the state since capital punishment was restored.
