February 27 - March 4, 2004 Statewide, PA

Moratorium Week in Pennsylvania

The week will consist of numerous, decentralized events and actions organized primarily on the regional and local levels with a consistent theme: to demand that Gov. Rendell impose an immediate moratorium on executions.
Moratorium Week was selected because of two significant dates that fall within three days of each other. March 1 is recognized each year as "Abolition Day," the anniversary of the date in 1847 in which the state of Michigan officially became the first English-speaking territory in the world to abolish capital punishment.
More importantly, March 4 will mark the one-year anniversary of the release of the report by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Committee on Racial and Gender Bias in the Justice System calling for a moratorium on executions. Consequently, Moratorium Week will culminate in a coordinated day of actions on Thursday, March 4, with demonstrations at Gov. Rendell's regional offices in Pittsburgh, Erie, Philadelphia and Wilkes-Barre.
These events will be designed to coincide with nonviolent direct action in Harrisburg, organized by an ad-hoc group of activists coming together from various parts of the state for a powerful and dramatic action calling on the governor to comply with the moratorium recommendation.
Detailed information on the events throughout the week and all across the State can be found at www.pa-abolitionists.org/moraweek2004.html

Journey of Hope. From Violence to Healing

Alaskans Against the Death Penalty and Amnesty International are co-sponsoring a statewide Journey of Hope tour in Alaska from March 1 - 22, 2004, that will focus on the juvenile death penalty and the issue of wrongful convictions. The tour features three nationally recognized individuals with direct personal experience with the current death penalty system in the United States. The tour has been organized in the standard format of the Journey of Hope. From Violence to Healing tours that have taken place in many states over the last 10 years, which is a team approach that includes one murder victim's family member, one former death row inmate, and one abolition activist. Specific speakers on the Alaska tour are:
  • >Bill Pelke, founder of Journey of Hope. From Violence to Healing, an organization of murder victim's family members opposed to the death penalty. Bill's grandmother Ruth Pelke was murdered in Indiana in 1985 by four teenage girls.
  • Juan Melendez Colon, former death row inmate, who spent nearly 18 years on Florida's Death Row. He was the 99th person in the U.S. released based on evidence of innocence since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Since his release in January 2002, he has traveled frequently to speak about his experiences on behalf of the international abolition movement.
Abe Bonowitz, founder of Citizens United Against the Death Penalty, a national advocacy group dedicated to abolishing the death penalty, and former national Board member of Amnesty International.
  • The tour will begin with an International Death Penalty Abolition Day vigil on Town Square in downtown Anchorage on March 1 at 5:00 p.m. followed by a reception and panel presentation on the Juvenile Death Penalty in America. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Snow City Cafe, 1034 W. 4th Avenue, the panel discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include Bill Pelke, Juan Melendez Colon, Brandt McGee, and Anchorage attorney and human rights activist and Susan Orlansky, an Anchorage attorney and pro bono counsel for a man on Death Row in Texas.

March 1, International Death Penalty Abolition Day, marks the anniversary of the date in 1847 in which the State of Michigan officially became the first English-speaking territory in the world to abolish capital punishment. It is a day to remember the victims of violent crime and their survivors; it is a day to remember those killed by state sanctioned violence - guilty or not- and their survivors; and it is a day for intensified education and action for alternatives to the death penalty.
