Alaskans Against the Death Penalty and Amnesty International are co-sponsoring a statewide Journey of Hope tour in Alaska from March 1 - 22, 2004, that will focus on the juvenile death penalty and the issue of wrongful convictions. The tour features three nationally recognized individuals with direct personal experience with the current death penalty system in the United States. The tour has been organized in the standard format of the Journey of Hope…From Violence to Healing tours that have taken place in many states over the last 10 years, which is a team approach that includes one murder victim’s family member, one former death row inmate, and one abolition activist. Specific speakers on the Alaska tour are:

  • Bill Pelke, founder of Journey of Hope…From Violence to Healing, an organization of murder victim’s family members opposed to the death penalty. Bill’s grandmother Ruth Pelke was murdered in Indiana in 1985 by four teenage girls. The girls’ ringleader, Paula Cooper, was 15 at the time of the murder and became the youngest female on death row in America. Pelke initially supported her death sentence but after praying for love and compassion, he forgave her and joined the effort to have it set aside. He has spoken nationally and internationally on the healing power of forgiveness.
  • Juan Melendez Colon, former death row inmate, who spent nearly 18 years on Florida’s Death Row. He was the 99th person in the U.S. released based on evidence of innocence since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Since his release in January 2002, he has traveled frequently to speak about his experiences on behalf of the international abolition movement. A migrant farm-worker before his arrest and imprisonment, Juan currently performs volunteer work on behalf of at-risk youth in his native Puerto Rico. Her credits his family and his faith in God with helping him to survive his ordeal.
  • Abe Bonowitz, founder of Citizens United Against the Death Penalty, a national advocacy group dedicated to abolishing the death penalty, and former national Board member of Amnesty International. Abe travels regularly to speak about his transformation from a supporter of the death penalty to one of its most vocal critics. He emphasizes issues of fairness, including how money, politics, race and geography have more to do with death sentences than the severity of the crime.

The tour will begin with an International Death Penalty Abolition Day vigil on Town Square in downtown Anchorage on March 1 at 5:00 p.m. followed by a reception and panel presentation on the Juvenile Death Penalty in America. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Snow City Cafe, 1034 W. 4th Avenue, the panel discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include Bill Pelke, Juan Melendez Colon, Brandt McGee, and Anchorage attorney and human rights activist and Susan Orlansky, an Anchorage attorney and pro bono counsel for a man on Death Row in Texas.

Bill, Juan and Abe will speak in schools, churches and civic groups in Anchorage, Homer, Soldotna, and Juneau. Please contact Mary Grisco at (907)258-1896 or megrisco@ak.net for additional information or to bring them to your area.
