Preparations for the press conference and rally to take place on the
steps
in front of the Texas State Capitol included the creation of visual
elements that would illustrate some of the concerns of the anti-death
penalty movement. These included signs that demonstrators would
hold, and
the assembly of 280 boxes representing the 280 boxes of crime scene
evidence "lost" by the Houston police department's crime lab. Some
of the
boxes were assembled into several walls that served as backdrops to
the
speakers, and the rest of the boxes were piled in front of the
podium.
As we were setting up, many visitors and workers (including
legislators)
were coming into and out of the Capitol. One group of young Spanish
speaking students came out and their guide asked me (Abe, in red
sweatshirt/hat) to explain what we were doing. She translated, and
then I
led all the students in chanting "Paren la Pena de Muerte!," which
means,
"Stop the Death Penalty!"
