SUGGESTIONS FOR DISTRIBUTING LEAFLETS AND GATHERING PETITION SIGNATURES AT "THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE"

(Different activists might handle this opportunity in different ways. Here is one set of suggestions.
CUADP has edited it slightly from the original provided by PAUADP.)

Thank you for your willingness to distribute anti-death penalty leaflets and gather signatures for our moratorium petition at the showing of the movie "The Life of David Gale". We appreciate your strong commitment to ending state-sanctioned killing in Pennsylvania. The following suggestions will help you make the most of this public education opportunity.

1. Downloading the Leaflet and Petition:

  • Download and print out the two separate PDF files (front and back) of the leaflet we are distributing outside theaters. After photocopying and cutting, the leaflet should be two-sided, 5.5 x 8.5 inches. It may be downloaded and photocopied, front and back, preferably on a light colored paper, if possible.
  • Also download a copy of the moratorium petition. There are 12 names per petition, so you shouldn't need to make as many copies of it.

A PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat is required for downloading.

2. Suggestions for Leafletting and Gathering Signatures:

  • We are asking people to distribute leaflets PRIOR TO the showing of the movie and to gather petition signatures AFTER the movie lets out, ideally in groups of two or more. We suggest arriving about 30 minutes before the movie starts and finding a good location to distribute leaflets. Depending on the location of the theater, you may be required to stand in an area some distance from the ticket window.
  • Be friendly and outgoing. Try to make eye contact as people approach the area where you're standing.
  • Since you probably won't know which movie people are coming to see at a multiplex, you will want to ask them if they are there to see "The Life of David Gale" before offering them a leaflet about the movie. We are strongly encouraging everyone participation in leafletting to hand the flier with "THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE" side facing up and the anti-death penalty information on the reverse. People will be much more likely to accept a leaflet that focuses on a movie they are interested in seeing.
  • If you are planning to see the movie when you go out leafletting, try to be positioned near the exit as the film ends so that you can be the first audience member to exit the theater (in order to get outside with the petitions before the rest of the audience leaves.) Please stand far enough outside of the exit doors to avoid creating a "traffic jam" in the lobby.
  • You will need clipboards and pens in order to make it as easy as possible for people to sign the petition. If possible, have several people with petitions collecting signatures in order to gather as many signatures as possible. People will probably not stand in a line to sign the petition. Also, be prepared to distribute more fliers to people who request them at this time.

3. Follow-up

  • Please send signed petitions (or copies of them) to Pennsylvania Abolitionists United Against the Death Penalty, P.O. Box 58128, Philadelphia, PA 19102. We will forward all of them in bulk to The Moratorium Campaign in New Orleans.
  • In addition to distribution at the movie theater, give leaflets and petitions to your friends, family and fellow activists -- invite them to join you in this effort. The more people distributing information and gathering signatures, the more of an impact we will have.
  • Please send us an e-mail and tell us how things went. And let us know if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.
Thanks again!
