STEVE EARLE didn't let a bit of rain keep him from delivering his message
at an anti-death penalty rally in front of the US Supreme Court. When a
thunderstorm interrupted his set, the alt-country hero led the crowd of
300-strong across the street to a church building, where he played a dozen
songs.

Earle: "People are looking at [executions] differently then
they used to."
|
"The death penalty is violence and murder that we all have a hand
in," says Earle. "If we kill as a country, as a people it diminishes
us. It teaches our children that revenge and retribution are OK and that
an appropriate way to answer violence is with violence."
