STARVIN' FOR JUSTICE 2002 - PICTURE GALLERY

Newcomers and Stalwarts
click on the images for enlarged view (this may take a few moments, please be patient)

These are just a few of the folk who supported the Fast and Vigil in 2002 and some of the reasons why they think you should come to the next Fast & Vigil.............

Abe (FL) 7th Fast & Vigil
"I think people should come to the Fast & Vigil because they will meet and work with some of the best abolitionists in the world, learn new information and skills for the work, and improve their ability to discuss the issue with strangers. Plus, its fun!" "

Sue Gunawardena-Vaughn, Director of Amnesty International USA's Program to Abolish the Death Penalty

Mike (TX)

Lisa (MA) left - 2nd F&V, and David
"I think people should come to the fast and vigil because it's a refreshing opportunity to spend time with people who have made the fight for human rights a real priority. Especially beneficial for a younger person is seeing the "veterans" of the cause in action and realizing that growing up doesn't have to mean giving up."

Doug

Faces familiar....

and faces unknown!

Anne (VA) 3rd Fast & Vigil
"In many ways, appearing at the F&V is more effective in reaching politicians and news organizations than other events because of the specialness of the venue, the attendance by people from all over the country/world, and the continuity in the event."

Ron (SC)
Tom
"Lots of good reasons, but for me, it's the people I see there. I find the whole experience inspiring and comforting."

Pam (Quebec) 2nd Fast &Vigil
"It is a great opportunity to interact with other abolitionists in a casual but meaningful manner."

Suzanne

Eli (MA) above - 1st Fast & Vigil

"It's an opportunity to encounter and offer one's self into the movement of peace and love. Seeing the faces of fellow participants is the Spirit of the movement."

Sarah (PA) right - 1st Fast & Vigil

"I think people should attend the fast & vigil because there you'll meet abolitionists from all over and every walk of life, focused on the same thing, returning every year until abolition... pamphleting and meeting the public on the streets is another great opportunity (for me especially ;-)) plus, at the end, as you can see, you get to break the fast!!"

Scoring with the Media
Eli (left) scored two "hits" for the Fast & Vigil
Read the coverage in the Boston Globe and the Patriot Ledger.

Daniel (MA), 1st Fast & Vigil

Maria (VA) 4th Fast & Vigil
"The fast and vigil is always a very moving experience. It feels good to educate and spread the message. Coming back each year is like a family reunion."

David (DC) 2nd Fast & Vigil
"Two reasons. First, because every type of activity toward abolition is important. It is important to be inside state legislatures and city councils lobbying. It is important to be in the corporate boardrooms of the largest philanthropic organizations, raising money. And it is important to be out in the streets (and in front of the Supreme Court) protesting. All of these activities must happen in harmony in order for us to achieve abolition.
The second reason why the fast and vigil in front of the Supreme Court is important is that it involves people NOT from Washington, D.C. People in Washington, D.C. already oppose the death penalty. We had a referendum on it and voted against it overwhelmingly. The involvement of people from states like Texas and Florida -- states that represent the "capital" of capital punishment -- is essential because it is these states that are executing people. Citizen protest is a cornerstone of democracy -- indeed, it is what led to the American Revolution. The Fast and Vigil is the very essence of this protest."

Bill (AK) left - 9th Fast & Vigil
Bill Pelke, Rick Halperin and Marietta Jeager-Lane founded the Fast & Vigil in 1994.
Since then, Bill has never missed a day of any F&V event.

Rick (TX) right
A co-founder of the Fast & Vigil, Rick was unfortunately unable to stay beyond the Opening Ceremony for this year's event but remained with us in spirit.

Nathan - 1st Fast & Vigil

Josh (DC) holding sign - 2nd Fast & Vigil
"The passion of those who particpate is truly inspirational and the opportunity to educate many many people is truly unique."
Click here for the poem that Josh read at the Rally on July 1st.

I mostly go because it gives me a chance to see my friends, and talk to the people on the streets, so I want others to come so I can get a chance to see them, outside of some stuffy policy meeting or something...

Jeff (CA)

Tim (IL)

Clay (FL) 2nd Fast & Vigil

Chris (DC) - 3rd Fast & Vigil

Scott (MA) far left, 1st Fast & Vigil

Karl (NJ) 2nd Fast & Vigil
(Karl's committment to the defense of others has twice mandated he be elsewhere at Fast and Vigil time)
"It recharges the soul for another year to fight this fight."
Steve (left) has provided entertainment and inspiration at four consecutive Fast & Vigils
Unable to make it this year, we look forward to his return in 2003.

Lt. Tim Dolan (right)
has been keeping a watchful (but cordial) eye on us for at least five years.
Not forgetting the Catholic Workers (left)
Their faces may change from year to year but the service they perform is priceless, and the food out of this world - thank you!

Plus countless others. If you are not pictured here but were at the Fast & Vigil, contact Pam. It may be that you escaped the all-seeing eye of Abe's camera or that we accidently dropped you on the cutting room floor! In which case, we will do our best to find you!
Of course if you weren't at the 2002 F&V, then we are sincerely hoping to add you to the newcomers in 2003 and look forward to introducing you to the stalwarts.
