10/19/2000: Here's More... "This & That"

Sent ONLY to the 2,180 list members of CUADPUpdate
(Feel Free to Forward)

Hello all,

I have to say that it was a heartening experience when, after I posted the "how to get off this list" message, the list experienced a net loss of only 50 recipients.  Of course, more than 50 unsubscribed, but I also announced to other lists that CUADPUpdate will no longer be posted there, and invited members of those lists to join.  I *know* a lot of people still don't read every word I write - I don't expect that for a second - but it is nice to know we have a solid list now.  Thanks very much to those who wrote to say why you enjoy the list and that you are staying on.  And even though they won't see it, I also want to thank all those who unsubscribed, but took pains to tell me that they appreciate the work of CUADP but for whatever reason need to reduce e-mail....

Turning to the weather, tonights forecast is DARK, with wildly spreading light in the morning.... And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

*NEW WEB DESIGN!

For a smile, click on the dog!  (Top right)

CUADP's web page has been completely revamped.  Take a look at <http://www.cuadp.org/>.  I am very interested in having your feedback and suggestions for additions and improvements.

I also want to HIGHLY RECOMMEND the services of Computer Partners, a Canadian firm run by an Abolitionist who has put his money where his mouth is.  That's right - last year when CUADP launched our Bush campaign, Bob Wakfer sent a significant contribution, and offered the services of his company at greatly reduced prices.  This latest redesign of the site was free.  The staff is a pleasure to work with, and of course, Mike, Computer Partners' Web Designer, is the best in the world.

DO YOU NEED WEB SERVICES?  You can support CUADP's work without sending us money.  Computer Partners will donate to CUADP 20% of the fees for all web design or web hosting services purchased as a result of clicking on the following link. <http://www.cuadp.org/compar.html>"

*STEVE EARLE ON NIGHTLINE -  FRIDAY NIGHT!

REMINDER - This profile on musician Steve Earle features footage from the "Concert at the Court" that Steve gave during the 7th Annual Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty this past June 29 - July 2.  CUADP helps to coordinate this annual event on behalf of the Abolitionist Action Committee <http://www.abolition.org>.  Consider joining us next year for the 8th annual F&V!

I received the following from the producer of the Nightline piece after I asked him if the Nightline piece is still on for the 20th:
>Yep.  We've wavered several times this week because of the
>Middle East, but we're slated for Friday.  I'll try and let
>you know if we have a last-minute change, or you can check
>back on Friday.  There will be a feature on the show on the
>ABC News website under the Nightline page, which is located
>at <http://abcnews.go.com/onair/nightline/NightlineIndex.html>.
>It should be posted by early evening today.  There will be a
>preview sequence there that I'm told comes from our third
>act on the death penalty.

Previously I had shared:
>>Peter from Nightline here.  FYI:  Our Steve Earle profile is
>>slated to air Friday, Oct. 6.  One third of the show will be
>>on Steve's abolition work and we feature the Supreme Court
>>vigil and Steve's description of Jonathan Noble's execution.
>>Note that Oct. 6 is pretty well set, but just be sure to say
>>that it is "scheduled" for that date.  We're a news program,
>>so any significant news story will bump a feature story like
>>this to a later date.

AND ON A RELATED NOTE....

FREE THE WEST MEMPHIS THREE!

Steve Earle is also one of many fine musicians that collaborated on a benefit CD to raise awareness for the plight of a group of young men known as the West Memphis Three, one of whom is on death row.  For details on the case, check <http://www.wm3.org>.  This CD hit stores on Oct. 10th and retails for about $17.99.  Thanks to Steve and the many artists who put this together, and aces and eights records for it's production.  Please support this effort.

CALENDAR UPDATED!

Special thanks again to CUADP VOLUNTEERS Pam Dyer and DeAnna Horne, who helped winnow numerous event announcements down to the core information for placement on the most comprehensive listing of abolitionist events anywhere.  With their help and that of Mike the web designer, the page is now as up to date as it can be.  What's more, Mike has added a form that web users can fill out themselves - right on the site!  Thanks Mike, Pam & DeAnna!  To see the Calendar, visit http://www.cuadp.org/ and click on "Event Calendar."

AND SPEAKING OF POLITICS

Thanks to Bill Dubay, who sent the following:
This comes from Judicial Watch at <http://www.judicialwatch.org>.
This should be an interesting debate

===============================================================

On Friday, October 20, from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. Eastern time, Judicial Watch will host a nationally televised presidential debate featuring six of the seven qualified presidential candidates. John Hagelin, Al Gore, Ralph Nader, Pat Buchanan, Harry Browne, and Howard Phillips have all accepted--only George W. Bush has declined.

C-SPAN has committed to televising the debate, and Fox TV and American Voice Radio are considering coverage. The debate will be moderated by a highly respected journalist, and the panel will be composed of other journalists from well-known national newspapers--both liberal and conservative.

Seven lecterns will be set up on stage--no matter who attends the debate. Each candidate will give an opening and closing statement and will be asked questions by the panel in rotating order.

The questions, while not set in advance, will reflect Judicial Watch concerns about ethics in politics--bribery laws, corporate control of government, independent counsel issues, etc.

About 600 people have been invited to the debate and to a reception immediately following, including over 30 Ambassadors and their seconds-in-command, as well as the entire Washington press corps.

We urge everyone to watch this debate, which certainly promises to be the most interesting and representative presidential debate of the season. As always, please check your local listings for up-to-the-minute scheduling; TV and radio news stations reserve the right to make last-minute changes.

ARE YOU IN CALIFORNIA?   WANT TO BE?

From: PROUDPOPPA@aol.com, Dick Carlburg writes:

Hi everyone,

The Candle of Hope Walk has started.  On Saturday, Oct 14th, we lit the candle at a church in downtown San Diego.  About twenty people attended the ceremony.  Then most of the people walked for two or three miles.  Tony, a friend of the Ghelardi's, walked about five miles before he developed blisters on both feet and had to stop.  Jeff Ghelardi and I then alternated carrying the candle for the next two days.  We arrived in Oceanside Sunday  afternoon.  Total distance covered was about sixty miles.  As I write, Jeff is carrying the candle by bicycle through Camp Pendleton.  The Marines would not let us walk through the reservation, but would let us bicycle through it.  On Wednesday, we start at the Orange County line and walk toward Newport Beach on Pacific Coast Highway.

We were on television in San Diego Saturday night.  They interviewed Jeff and I and showed us walking down PCH.  It was broadcast Saturday evening and the next day several people commented that they had see it.  Most of the reactions that we got as we traveled were either positive or from people who were interested in learning more.  Only a few negative comments such as "Fry them all!"

I do see a major problem ahead if San Diego is typical.  Many more people said they would walk with us then actually did.  For the vast majority of the time it was only Jeff and I.  If we don't get more help as we move up the coast, this project could fail.  Jeff will be walking through Orange County, but I have very few firm commitments from people beyond Orange County.  I have sent the route to all of you and I would ask that you let me know by e-mail or phone what part of the route you can support.  My cell phone number is 714-222-2164.

COFFEE DRINKERS BEWARE!
Tom Gill sends:
> Burma's ruling junta has declared caffeine a narcotic.
> Wednesday's announcement -- in the English language New Light of
> Myanmar newspaper -- did not say whether coffee drinkers would be

Magdaleno - what will we do!?!

Lots more to catch up on - watch for another update shortly.
Meanwhile, Be Well!
