8/27/2001: EXCITING NEWS REGARDING CUADP!!
Sent *only* to the more than 2,800 recipients of CUADPUpdate
Hello all,
I hope that August is treating you well. If you have noticed that
CUADP
has been rather silent lately, you should know that things are
anything but
quiet! I am excited to tell you about the following news:
During the last eight weeks, CUADP has experienced significant
changes
that will become more apparent very soon. Under the guidance of a
professional financial advisor and others who are evaluating
operational
details, a plan to secure and expand CUADP's base is under way. This
advisory panel is scrupulously analyzing the nuts and bolts of the
organization and is helping with ongoing planning. CUADP has been
fortunate in now having identified and recruited a cluster of
volunteers
assigned responsibility for discreet and critical components of its
program. These volunteers and their roles include:
* Mair Buddug <mair@cuadp.org>
of Lake Park, FL, is overseeing the updating
and streamlining of our database.
* Lisa Duford <lisa@cuadp.org>
of Gainesville, FL, is developing the
volunteer corps. Late last year we added a "volunteer"
form to the web
page <http://www.cuadp.org/contact.html>.
Hundreds of people have filled
this form out, volunteering to be an "on-line activist,"
write letters to
the editor, raise money, start a local action center, lead on
moratorium
efforts, etc. CUADP passes these folks on to the organizations in
their
state. Lisa is following up with these volunteers, and has accepted
the
challenge of filling requests for information which originate from
the
internet. CUADP continues to explore diverse and rich possibilities
reflected in the interests and aptitudes of potential volunteers.
Watch
for details in a future announcement.
* Jana Cole <jana@cuadp.org>
of Wellington, FL, is responding to prisoner
correspondence. Although not a prisoner-services organization, CUADP
nonetheless receives at least 20 requests for information or
assistance
from prisoners (death row and other) every month. We cannot ignore
these
folks, so in conjunction with Sam Reese Sheppard's 1999 Innocence
Walk from
DC to Cleveland <http://www.samreesesheppard.org>,
we established the
"wrongful convictions" section on its web site
<http://www.cuadp.org/pot.html>,
where anyone can list their innocence
claim - even those not under sentence of death! Jana supervises this
part
of the web site and responds to corespondance we receive from
prisoners and
their supporters.
* Pam Dyer <pam@cuadp.org>
of Sainte-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada, coordinates
the calendar section of the web site
<http://www.cuadp.org/upevents.html>.
Unique in the movement, the calendar
is evolving into an even more comprehensive and useful tool than
ever before.
* Suzanne Carter <suzanne@cuadp.org>
and Cheri Wallingford
<cheri@cuadp.org>, of the
Terre Haute (IN) Abolition Network, maintain the
inventory and fill orders for AbolitionWear
<http://www.cuadp.org/abolitionwear.html>.
This is a BIG JOB! And it is
about to get bigger, as CUADP enters a new partnership by providing
marketing support for Equal Justice USA's Moratorium Now! Campaign.
Other programmatic elements will continue, including CUADP's
coordination
role with the Abolitionist Action Committee <http://www.abolition.org>,
Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty <http://www.fadp.org>,
and
our newest initiative - the articulation of a unified strategy for
abolition <strategy@abolition.org>.
Coming up on the calendar is the North
Carolina Journey of Hope ...From Violence to Healing
<http://www.journeyofhope.org>
followed by the 25th anniversary / annual
conference of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty
<http://www.ncadp.org> -
we'll be there!
CUADP will continue to update you on developments. Positive
change *is*
under way, and YOUR HELP is needed to build the momentum.
CUADP has outgrown its current quarters. We need enlarged,
conventional
office space, upgraded machines, formal administrative support and
other
paid staff. Such new resources will enhance CUADP's effectiveness
and
position it to be a much stronger force in the struggle to stop
state
killing. We have already issued a local appeal for office space and
volunteers. CUADP envisions an office that will coordinate several
simultaneous campaigns and events on a state and national level.
Before CUADP can move into an office or open a payroll, it must
have
several months' expenses in the bank and a steady and predictable
income. Will you help?
THE "POCKET CHANGE" CHALLENGE:
There are currently more than 2,800 individuals receiving
CUADPUpdate. Twelve of those people have joined CUADP's monthly
sustainer
program through automatic credit card contributions. With a range
between
$5 and $100, the average monthly sustainer contribution is $36. If
each of
the 2,800+ supporters who are reading this message were to pledge
even just
$2 a month, the income generated would be more than enough to secure
an
office and hire initial staff. How about it? $2, $5 or more each
month
from you will make a difference in what CUADP is doing and will
continue to
do to help abolish the death penalty. In anticipation of your
participation, CUADP feels honored, and thanks you. WE PROMISE TO
CONTINUE
TO DELIVER GOOD WORK TOWARD OUR COMMON GOAL.
"Checkbook" activism IS a vital component of this work!

PS: We need your help now, but we encourage you to support your
local
and/or state abolitionist organization(s) and the National Coalition
to
Abolish the Death Penalty.
PPS: We also seek your advice. What suggestions do you have that
can help
CUADP become more effective. How can we be more helpful to you? How
can we
better use the monies raised, and can you suggest others who we
should ask
for assistance?
