10/03/2001: LATEST CUADP APPEAL
3 October 2001
Dear Friend,
Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (CUADP) was
deeply disturbed and affected by the events of September 11, 2001,
and we offer our sympathies to all. As we move on with our lives,
many abolitionists are asking: “Won’t it be difficult to counter
the demands for vengeance?” “Can we continue to oppose the death
penalty in the wake of such horrible crimes?”
The answer to the first question is, “Yes, it will be hard.”
But our challenge remains the same. As abolitionists, our mission is
to educate the public about why the death penalty is a bad public
policy. In fact, the only thing that makes our job more difficult at
this juncture is the increased focus on revenge that the attack
generates in the minds of an outraged public. In the end, no amount
of killing will equal the value of our loved ones lost to violence.
Therefore, we must stay focused. The answer to the second question
is a definite “Yes!”
CUADP will continue, and in recent months we have expanded our
capacity by putting significant responsibilities into the hands of
trusted volunteers in California, Canada, Florida, Indiana,
Massachusetts, and Wisconsin. But because certain functions still
need to be centralized, our most urgent goal is to develop a funding
base consistent enough to allow the opening of a new office and the
hiring of a professional administrative assistant/ office manager.
This will allow us to better do what we do best: Educate, Activate,
and Change….
Please consider joining CUADP’s Sustainer program by filling in
the appropriate box on the donor response form. Currently CUADP has
20 sustainers giving between $5 and $100 for a total of $400 each
month. When we can depend on a monthly income of $2,500, CUADP will
have that office, a part-time administrative employee, and the
resources to maintain our standard programs. If you cannot become a
sustainer at this time, please send what you can.
Support from you and others like you makes everything we do
possible. As always, if you have questions, ideas, or if I can be
helpful to you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact my
office. I wish you peace.
Yours in the Struggle,
Abraham J. Bonowitz
