"5 More Abolitionists" - A bedtime story....

18 July 2000

Greetings all,

A few quick updates. I plan to send details on the
Fast & Vigil and my very interesting experience at the
National Governor's Association meetings just as soon as
we can get the photos up on the website. Also in the
works - an updated Calendar of Upcoming DP Related Events.
So, look for a flurry of messages in the next few days.
Then it will quiet down again for a while. Enjoy!

*******

THANKS!

I want to say MANY THANKS to everyone who sent in
financial contributions over the past few weeks. We
received many $5 bills, and quite a few larger sums too.
Personal thank-you letters are on their way this week, but
if you are one of several people who simply sent a gift
with no name or return information, I can't send you a
personal thanks, so this is it! Your gift makes our work
possible. Together we are making the difference!

WATCH 20/20 WEDNESDAY NIGHT

CUADP Advisory Board Member Marietta Jaeger Lane wrote to
say:

"<?bigger>Hi, Abe!<?/bigger> <?bigger>FYI: Just got a call from the folks at ABC:
My story will be on a special hour-long edition of 20/20
this Wednesday night (check local listing for time)..."

If you are unfamiliar with Marietta's story, the
nutshell is that her daughter was kidnapped and eventually
murdered. Marietta wrestled with G-d and herself, wanting
to strangle the murderer with her own hands, but knowing
that the hatred was consuming her and magnifying the
nightmare for her and her family. Marietta chose to
forgive, and in doing so was able to help the police
catch the murderer. She is known globally for her message
and example, and is a leader in the abolition movement.

That said, 20/20 has promised that the focus
will be on forgiveness, but not having seen it and,
and knowing the wiles of the media, I'll reserve judgement
until after I see the program. Please watch, and then
send your comments - good or bad - to 20/20 via their
website at <http://abcnews.go.com/onair/2020/2020Index.html>.

FEDERAL KILLING/INDIANA MARCH POSTPONED

The killing of Juan Garza was scheduled for August 5,
and would have been the first federal execution in almost 40
years. CUADP has been working with Indiana activists to plan
a march from Indianapolis to Terre Haute, and a vigil outside
the prison at the time of the killing. Given the timing,
politics, and a number of other practical considerations, the
march and vigil have been postponed until a new killing date
is set. That said, we are still in planning mode and invite
sponsors and co-conspirators. Please visit
<http://www.abolition.org> and click on "Upcoming Actions" for
more details and to get involved. Included there is a letter
writing action, so it is worth the visit just to do that!

TAKE ACTION, The easy way!

Jim Harris wrote me a year or so ago and invited me to take
advantage of new service he created called the Progressive
Secretary. Basically, I get a notice every few days asking
me to approve a letter to be sent via e-mail in my name to
selected public officials. All I need to do is hit "reply,"
and put an "x" in the box for "send" or "don't send" the
letter. There is a large variety of issues which the
Progressive Secretary addresses, but I have chosen to focus
on just a few. The whole thing is set up to allow me the
ultimate control over when and how my name is used. And
while it is true that a letter on paper is more effective,
politicians do recognize e-mail communications. But don't
take my word for it. Give ProgSec a try by visiting <http://www.ProgressiveSecretary.Org>.

PAYPAL

Special thanks to long time friend and supporter
Mike Lax of Texas, who responded to CUADP's recent appeal
for assistance by sending a gift via "PAYPAL," a web
based "middleman" which allows people in the US who have
a credit card or a bank account to send money via e-mail.
It took a little setting up, but it works, and I encourage
you to check it out. Now, I know I sound like a real
PayPal lover here. I'll point out that they are NOT
paying me to plug them, as I don't accept money for plugs.
However CUADP, like any other PayPal user, gets a $5 bounty
for anyone who signs up via our link. And it IS a cool
service. Send CUADP a gift, or use it to pay your bills,
but if you sign up through the following URL, Paypal will
give CUADP $5. As you know, every little bit makes a
difference! <https://secure.paypal.com/affil/pal=abe%40cuadp.org>

This is probably a good time to remind you that if
you shop at Amazon.com, and you link to them through CUADP's
site <http://www.cuadp.org/books.html>, and click on the
Amazon.com logo (I just checked - it looks broken, but it
works....), CUADP will receive a cut of your purchase. Thanks.

And now, a bedtime story... FIVE NEW ABOLITIONISTS

This is a true story. Just this afternoon (7/18/2000),
as usual I ran out to the post office at the last minute.
As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed the Red Cross
bloodmobile. Recalling the news story that blood stocks
are low across the country, I resolved to see if they were
still taking donors - AFTER I sent off the latest batch of
AbolitionWear orders. Well, I was ONE MINUTE late - the
line for the post office had already been blocked off.
Having no fear of the Government, I walked around the
barricade and said to Bob (the counter guy), "Got time for
one more?" In unison, Bob and the woman working the counter
said, "Only if you give blood!" I didn't tell them I already
had planned to, but I said, "sure!" A few minutes later,
the bloodmobile lady came in, and both postal workers
said, "We got another one for you!" and Bob added in a
loud voice, "BUT YOU HAVE TO OPPOSE THE DEATH PENALTY!"

Now this is interesting, because in the almost
two years I have been using this post office, I have never
discussed the issue with any of the workers there. I make
it a rule to never initiate a conversation, particularly
when it might cause a worker to violate company policy.
There have been a few occasions where another customer has
made a comment or asked a question, but never the workers.
But few are the days when I've been to the post office
without an AbolitionWear item on.

Anyway, as we walked out, the bloodmobile lady said
she wasn't sure how she felt about the death penalty. By
the time I gave my pint, she and the four other workers
agreed with me that when you set aside the concept and look
only at the practice, it is not hard to see the death
penalty for what it is: BAD PUBLIC POLICY. Of course,
they all agreed. Unfortunately, I had broken my own rule
and had left the office without any fliers or a petition.
Only one of the bloodmobile workers was ready to get on
the list, but the rest have the number (800-973-6548),
the website (http://www.cuadp.org> and plenty to think
about!

And with that, before I say goodnight, I offer for
your perusal....

Good night!

paz!

ABOLITIONWEAR(tm)

IF YOU'RE NOT WEARING THE MESSAGE
YOU'VE MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATE

Let AbolitionWear do the talking! One of our
challenges is to heighten the visibility of the anti-
death penalty movement. Wear a T-shirt, sweatshirt,
or a button and give the cashier, the bank teller, or
whomever else you encounter the chance to get the facts
from someone who knows why the death penalty is bad
public policy. Or if you don't like to talk, simply
hand them one of the handy dandy fact sheets that comes
with any order!

All shirts are 100% preshrunk cotton. Minimum
donation is $14 for 1, $13 each for 2-5, $12 each for 6
or more. Please note that these suggested minimum
donations are the same for all sizes, from small - XXXXXL*.
(* Sadly, our printers can't always get quality 100% cotton
garments in the larger sizes (4x & 5x). Therefore, sometimes
the material for these sizes will be 50/50. We regret that
manufacturer bias limits our ability to give you the same as
everyone else. BUT, know that while our cost to produce
these is higher, your minimum suggested donation is exactly
the same as that for those who wear size small. We love all
abolitionists! There is NO SURCHARGE for being big.)
