9/5/2000: Not in jail... yet!

SENT TO THE MORE THAN 1,800 SUBSCRIBERS TO CUADPUpdate
Feel free to forward!

NO ADS!  Thanks to Mike Lax & Aba Gail.
***************************************

Greetings all!

I hope this finds you in the best that life has to offer.  Over the past six weeks or so, you've heard a lot less from me then normal.  In part this has been due to my harried schedule and my backlog of e-mail and other mail and projects, and in part, this is due to my decision to slow down a little while the slow season (August) was upon us.  BUT, now it is time to get back into the swing of things, so in the coming week or two I'll be catching up, sharing some of the stories of the actions of the last two months, updating you on CUADP projects and programs, and generally flooding your e-mail "in" box.  ;-)

To those of you who sent messages like:

>Abe, You've been suspiciously quiet lately.
>Are you in jail?  Your fervently devoted
>former codefendant, Margaret

Thanks for your concern!

As it happens, I managed to stay out of the round-ups ("preventative" and otherwise) at the Republican convention. However, a month earlier I was harassed by PA State Police when I joined with Pennsylvania Abolitionists United Against the Death Penalty at the National Governor's Association meeting in State College, PA.  The charges against us for "blocking the highways" were dismissed, however the day before our action I was followed, pulled over by no fewer then six unmarked state police cars (they asked to search the car - I said "No") and given a ticket for "failing to signal a right turn."  More details shortly, but I will return to PA this week to contest the ticket, and in the process we hope to expose a piece of the growing "law enforcement" tactic of disruption aimed at abolitionists and other activists. Stay tuned for details and photos!

Here's a few other matters to be aware of:

The Calendar of Upcoming DP Related Events will be updated within the next week.  CUADP seeks a volunteer to help manage and update the calendar.  (I just can't seem to stay on top of it!).  If you have an hour or so each week, basic e-mail skills, a desire to help and the willingness to make a commitment to the project, please send me an e-mail at <abe@cuadp.org>.

If you have NEW CALENDAR ITEMS to add, please use the format detailed at http://www.cuadp.org/info.html

SR. HELEN FOR PRESIDENT!
Well, no, not really, BUT, it is true that Sr. Helen Prejean, CUADP Advisory Board Member, author of Dead Man Walking, and a leader in the movement to abolish the death penalty, is again in the running for the NOBEL Peace Prize.

It really goes without saying that IF Sr. Helen were to receive this extraordinary award the, movement to abolish the death penalty in the United States would be substantially enhanced. The prestige and significance that attaches to this award are profound. The award symbolizes the respect that the most scholarly, civilized and spirit-led people of the world have for the recipient and his or her work.  Please take the following action ASAP!

Please write or email the Nobel Committee. Tell them why you believe Sister Helen is a worthy recipient of this most prestigious award. Addresses appear below. The award is announced in October, so time is of the essence.

Write to:
Gunnar Berge
Chairman
The Norwegian Nobel Committee

ANOTHER ACTION:  Pass the Innocence Protection Act (IPA)
As you may know the IPA ensures DNA testing for those tried for Capitol Crimes, creates standards for competent legal counsel and above all seeks to avoid the chance that innocent people are executed.  One letter writing action is available from Amnesty's Government Action Network on-line at http://www.amnestyusa.org/raisetheroof.  Please take action.

ELECTION TIME!
Here in Florida, today (Sept. 5) is a day for primary elections in races for state and local political offices.  Amazingly enough, in my district, one of the three Republicans running for State Senate is a proclaimed abolitionist.  He is a smart guy - opposed to the death penalty because it does not make sense pragmatically, and it does not fit in with his beliefs that all life is sacred.  The other two candidates brag about their support for the death penalty.  SO, *I* am putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and today you will find me working my local polling station, seeking to get more votes for this candidate.  I urge you to look for local candidates in your area to support - make sure they know why you are there, and let's back up candidates (of whatever party) who are willing to be leaders instead of politicians.

ABOLITIONWEAR can now be seen on the CUADP web page.  I hope to soon get the site to where the photos are a little better and to where orders can be placed right on the site, but not yet. Still, check out the photos at http://www.cuadp.org/abolitionwear.html
