Nightline is expected to begin its much anticipated 4-part series on
the death penalty on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The ABC program
usually airs at 11:35 PM here in the east. We anticipate a
program which reflects the growing unease many supporters of the
death penalty have been expressing recently.

Steve Earle was profiled on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday. The
piece was good. I thought it fairly reflected the man many of
us have come to know since the time he was involved with the music
for the film Dead Man Walking, and who some of us have known for
even longer. There was about two minutes about Steve's work
against the death penalty, including some footage and speech making
at the 7th Annual Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty.
Louise (of John & Louise Steinbach), an activist and leader now
in her 90's, was clearly shown enjoying the show in her "I
Oppose the Death Penalty, Don't Kill For Me" t-shirt, and our
signs and banners looked great. Thanks to everyone who helped
make that photo work for us! And thanks to Steve Earle, for
all you do! (It was also very nice to see Sara!)

I don't usually don't do this, but recently I have received several
announcements from people on the lists. Both offer you some
interesting opportunities. Check 'em out!

Subject: this will help if you're feeling discouraged!
I wrote a song about the death penalty, a satire that spooks the nra,
bush & others (are they different)? anyway, the song is on my
web page & free for the listening; i am very confident that your
members & supporters will get a little lift from listening to
it; the song is "burning bushes"--isn't that an
appropriate, biblical title? please pass the site along to anyone
who will get something from it;

All truth passes through three stages:
1. It is ridiculed.
2. It is violently opposed.
3. It is accepted as being self-evident.
