Be A Driver in the CUADP Capital Campaign!

...Help Pay for the Rolling Billboard!

Rolling down the highway or strategically parked, the Rolling Billboard carries lots of stuff, and also serves to help spread our message and attract attention. It certainly attracts a lot of fingers, but thumbs up seems to outweigh the middle finger by 10:1! At the Abolition Day Tour event at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, special permission was granted to park the vehicle right in the center of the main campus, where it served as a backdrop for interviews and to attract interested students. On Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, we were sniffed by the bomb squad three times that we know of, but after a couple of days the Capitol Police just waived us through! In the photo at right, we are being sniffed again before unloading the stage and equipment for the rally with Steve Earle.

An e-mail appeal seeking to borrow or rent a recreational vehicle for the Abolition Day Tour led to the offer of the use of a minivan, and that led to a LOAN to purchase a new (used) minivan and brand new trailer. Instead of pouring money into a rental vehicle, CUADP decided to put abolition dollars into a tangible asset that will continue to work for our movement long after the tour ended. We were confident that we could raise significant funds for this effort, but we had not counted on several expensive repairs, including a $630 brake job, a $3,000 transmission, and most recently, a $900 air conditioning compressor, which we would have skipped except the same belt runs other vital components. Fuel costs killed us as well. With the trailer loaded, we got about 200 miles per tank of gas, depending on the terrain. The loan received from a fellow abolitionist was interest-free until the end of May, and is now accruing interest (4% annually) on a daily basis. The loan must be repaid in full by December 31st, 2004.
