UPDATE: Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death
Penalty (CUADP) has been working for more than a year
with activists on the ground in Terre Haute and Indiana in preparation for the first federal
execution. Whether it be McVeigh, or Juan Raul Garza (scheduled to be
killed June 19, 2001), we are ready, we are organizing abolitionists
nationwide, and we'll be there.
The web pages are being updated today. The growing
list of demonstrations
and vigils that had been planned for May 15 and 16 in
cities across the nation should be expected to be an accurate reflection
of activities which will take place at such time that the feds to get around
to their first federal prisoner-killing. For further updates, after 3pm
today, Go to http://www.cuadp.org
and check out "Circus McVeigh."
CUADP's statement regarding Juan Garza:
"Juan Raul Garza is scheduled to be killed by
the people of the United States at 7am on June 19, 2001 in revenge for his murder
of Thomas Albert Rumbo, Gilberto Matos and Erasmo de la Fuente. But not
really. Actually, he was a drug dealer, and his skin is brown. True, he
committed some murders, but our government does not care about THOSE victims,
who were also drug dealers. In fact, because they thought the jury would
also not see those victims as being valuable enough to warrant an
execution, the prosecutors introduced information during sentencing about murders
in Mexico that Garza was alleged (but not proven) to have also committed....
Garza is being killed not because "justice demands it," but
because we CAN kill him, and because his skin is brown."
