Public Action = Being visible in public International Death Penalty Abolition Day is the perfect opportunity to call attention to the fact that the death penalty is a bad public policy, and that viable alternatives to the death penalty exist, and work! The only limitation is your creativity. How many more ideas can you think of? Please write them down and send them to us for inclusion in next years Abolition Day Action-Pak. Please also let us know what you did and how well it worked! Ask your religious leader to speak from the pulpit about the lessons to be learned from the perspective of your faith practice. March 1 is a Wednesday this year. Use the weekends around March 1st to organize in communities of faith. Excellent resource materials are available from Amnesty International USA's Program to Abolish the Death Penalty. Visit http://www.amnestyusa.org/faithinaction/ or contact the program via e-mail at khoule @ aiusa.org for a variety of faith based organizing material. One idea is to ask the local churches to toll their bells for alternatives to the death penalty and to advertise this to their members in advance. Take a look at the For Whom The Bells Toll campaign at www.curenational.org/~bells/ for more information about this idea, and to consider making it a year-round practice! Copy and pass out the informational flier, "You Are Making A Difference If You..." at the mall, library, ball game, grocery store, etc. Let people have the chance to learn the facts about the death penalty before they decide where they stand. (Don't forget to wear your AbolitionWear!)
