FIRST FAST - FAST FOR LIFE
Launched on Abolition Day, 2002
Wherever you are on the First Day of Every Month....
It doesn't matter where you are, EVERYONE is invited to join in a Fast for
Life on the first day of each month. This is an easy as well as spiritual
and healthy way to spread some hope and educate at the same time. Just
whatever you are doing (besides eating), fast to raise awareness about the
death penalty. Be sure to share with those around you what you are doing,
and why.
If a strict fast is difficult or impossible for you, just do juices, avoid
animal products, or give up chocolate or cigarettes for a day! You create
your own fast conditions....
For background and tips on fasting, visit www.abolition.org/goodinfo.html#Fasting.
First Fast is the brainchild of Mary Grace and is promoted by the
Abolitionist Action Committee and other individuals working for
ABOLITION. For questions and to let us know you are participating, please
E-mail: firstfast@abolition.org

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
For Whom the Bells Toll is a national initiative to have religious
organizations throughout the country toll their bells whenever there is an

LEGACY OF LIFE NATIONAL HISTORICAL SITE
Michigan was the first English-speaking commonwealth in the world to
abolish the death penalty. The last human being to be executed under
Michigan law was hanged in 1830 where our downtown public library now
stands. We plan to make the hanging square a national historical site. We
will install a monumental sculpture there -- a gift to the City of
Detroit, the State of Michigan, the citizens of the United States, and all
the people of the Earth from "those who labor in the service of
light."

MORATORIUM NOW CAMPAIGN
Equal Justice USA kicked off the Moratorium Now! campaign in August 1997,
shortly after the American Bar Association passed a resolution calling for
a moratorium on all U.S. executions. The campaign seeks to build momentum
for a national moratorium by mobilizing local groups to adopt their own
resolutions and to recruit others in their area to join the call.

STOP TDCJ ISOLATION CELLS
Although no one single effort will accomplish the monumental goal of
convincing the Texas Department of Criminal Justice that permanently
encasing people in isolation cells is inappropriate, we urge you to
participate in this important campaign. Nancy Bailey writes:
"I'd like to give you a quick update on the mail campaign opposing
isolation cells for death row inmates in Texas. Responses have been
really great and continue to pour in to this day. I'm struggling to
process them all, but am happy to have them. What hasn't poured in is
financial help to assist in the enormous costs of postage and paper
products. I really appreciate everyone's efforts, and hope they will
continue. I will be happy to supply anyone with additional sets of
letters or petitions or both if you will contact me directly at nlbailey@earthlink.net.
Further, I'd like to thank all those who have made a financial
contribution. If YOU or anyone you know can assist me with these
expenses, I would be eternally grateful. Financial donations can be sent
to:

THE MORATORIUM CAMPAIGN
Moratorium 2000 Continues on as The Moratorium Campaign With so much
success we decided to continue on with a name that, like our cause, has no
time limits
The Moratorium Campaign is a campaign to obtain an immediate moratorium on
the death penalty. The project includes a coordinated global petition
drive. Worldwide, over 3.2 million people have signed the petition for a
moratorium and the number is growing.
In the U.S., this effort is led by Sister Helen Prejean, a Nobel Peace
Prize nominee and author of Dead Man Walking.
